Some people tried last-minute crossings overnight, but most of the border was quiet on Friday, while U.S. officials braced for the days ahead.

Fugitive wanted in decades-old murder case arrested at Hidalgo International Bridge

On Monday, officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge apprehended Rigoberto Resendez, a U.S. citizen from Queretaro, Mexico. Resendez was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for a murder committed in 2000.

According to a release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, on June 11, 2000, an incident occurred where a victim was assaulted at the Players Club in rural Donna. When deputies arrived at the location the found a man with injuries to his face and chest area. The man died at the scene of his injuries and during the course of the investigation, Resendez was identified as a suspect by witnesses.

On Monday when the 47-year-old arrived at the Hidalgo International Bridge, a CBP officer immediately secured him after discovering Resendez was a fugitive and a possible match to the outstanding warrant.

John ASHLEY is a convicted sex offender required to register monthly. He has ties to the Fort Worth, Texas area. In May 2020, ASHLEY was convicted of Sexual Assault of a Child after an incident involving a 16-year-old girl. He was sentenced to 120 months of probation. On December 14, 2020, the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for ASHLEY's arrest for Probation Violation. Additionally, on December 1, 2021, the Fort Worth Police Department issued a warrant for his arrest for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
